Homily on Mary and Martha

Last month, I had the opportunity to preach at our church. The lectionary Gospel reading was on Jesus' visit with Mary and Martha, obviously a favorite passage of contemplatives. I wanted to share my sermon with this community as well. It is longer than our usual blog posts, so rather than posting the text here, I've made it available on Google Docs for anyone who is interested. The link is below. Peace.

John, thanks for sharing this sermon. I've always liked the Martha-Mary story, and I really appreciated the connections you made. I particularly like how you made us think positively about both women. Thanks for your investment in writing it and for posting it. I wish I had been there in person to hear it! Blessings, Anna

John, I love your sermon. Your call for balance is very wise. And your call for us to engage in action out of a peaceful awareness of God's presence rather than out of the stress or frenetic pressure of our own strength and understanding is so very important. I want to live that way and to faithfully nurture my relationships with others who are committed to this kind of life in God.

I appreciate the broad view, the inclusive in your reading of a story that otherwise is often read as either/or. Thank you!
